"So we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another."

           Romans 12:5

Jesus gave us a new mandate before He was crucified: “love one another, just as I have loved you” (John 13:34).

Though the world is often a complex place, Jesus’ core message is a simple one. He made it about “one another,” a sense of unity, tandem, togetherness, giving up of oneself for someone else. Very simple—but it is by no means easy. Loving one another is, by my estimation, the hardest thing to do.

If we try to understand this message through the lens of the world, we end up with a twisted goal: how can we make it easier to love each other? As is our human tendency, we try to concoct perfected methods by which showing Christ’s love will be seamless. Unfortunately, it does not work that way. His love cannot be controlled or formulated into our image. His love is not something we can grasp; rather, it grasps us.

I have no problem with a form or method that points one to the love of Christ. Truly, without the Church and the Bible, I would not know Him like I do. However, I often see people lazily depend on the form and forget to pursue the substance. Paul writes it the best:

"If I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge...but have not love, I am nothing"

           (1 Corinthians 13:2).

What is a body if it has no soul? Form is fleeting. We must see through the lens of eternity—through the eyes of Jesus.

Jesus didn’t spend His time on earth with everyone; as a human, He focused on His relationships with twelve people. He showed us the importance of personal relationships. This is how we show love like He did: one person at a time. Personal connection and investment is the beginning of so many great stories of faith. Stepping into this next chapter, I believe relationships, rather than people groups, will need to be the focus of the mission field. Go Forth has been moving in that direction for some time, and I am eager to tell you how things are going.

               For Go Forth Ministry, Christ’s mission is our mission. “Love one another” is our best outreach tool. It is guided by Him alone, not my preconceptions, systems, desires or failures—of which there are too many to count. His call to togetherness is what drives our call to the mission field;

“We love because He first loved us”

(1 John 4:19). Leading by example, our unity in the Body of Christ can pull people out of disillusionment, isolation and despair, and into newness with Him.

As always, we are so grateful for your support. God has provided for us, time and time again, so that we can continue to do the good work He has prepared for us to do. Because we know that He has come through in the past, we can move forward with boldness. May God bless GFM as we do His work, and may His will be done in all things!

Two years ago, God commissioned us for this task: reach young artists via creative spaces, teach them to see His Beauty through their craft, and send them out. This discipleship mission continues apace with two main projects in the works, and several along the outskirts. The potential to spread the influence of Christ in these creative environments keeps growing.

The focus of these projects is community. We make things with people, building relationships as we go; then God uses that space to spark conversation, change hearts, and bring the Holy Spirit into people's lives. The groundwork is laid; now we start bringing people in.

is in full swing. We have uploaded 3 episodes and are working on the 4th. The production process is slow, but the kinks are getting worked out with time. The input of those involved has been so generous and encouraging.

The time is coming to start "recruiting:" going out to find talents to work on this project with us. Currently, we have several disciples in place, working on this project together. Soon, they will get the opportunity to speak life into people who do not have it yet.

In the previous blog, I told you about a project having to do with digital collectibles: Valley of Dry Bones. Through frequent talks with GFM board member Jonathan Graham, we have been following God's lead and anticipating His guidance. I believe God is laying the groundwork for this to become a large-scale project, spanning chat servers, gaming groups and other online communities.

Right now, the exact path is unclear; but we see the puzzle coming together one piece at a time. Again, please pray that we make good connections for this to be everything God needs it to be.

I believe God is planning something important through the relationships we are making in Taiwan. On this last trip, even though I was only in 3 countries, I spent time with people from 9 different countries around the world. Many of these were people who are sold out for Jesus, pursuing Him with everything they have; and I had an immediate connection with them as brothers and sisters in Christ. I feel God's hand, weaving these threads together. Who knows what might come of these connections in 10-15 years?

                But why Taiwan?

That little country has become a big focal point, politically, culturally and spiritually. It stands mostly alone as a bastion of free speech in its hemisphere, making it a ripe harvest field for evangelism. More than that, it is at a crucial tipping point. The island's big communist neighbor to the west is constantly threatening its freedom. The Taiwanese people are torn; while the older generation would fight to the death to maintain their current standing, the younger generation would avoid conflict, even if it means giving up their freedoms. The country is in a volatile position, much like Hong Kong in the early 1990s.

I think we should approach every volatile situation like it's an opportunity. No one knows what will happen with Taiwan's geopolitical standing. But, even if the worst takes place, God is in control; in fact, His hand would be in it, guiding all things toward His purposes. I believe He uses those hard times to turn people to Him, and bring a greater number into His kingdom. The book of Daniel is a reference point for this: when Babylon besieges Jerusalem, do we run and hide, or do we offer our services to the foreign king, knowing that God's will shall be done?

I cannot be certain that this type of situation will take place. I just have a feeling in my gut that now is the time to raise up the Daniels of this region. God could always use more devout, steadfast, capable people to infiltrate the kingdoms of this world. I intend to connect with those people, many of whom are beginning to come through Taiwan for missions. God is moving the pieces; we need to respond.

Since our overseas update in October, we have taken 2 trips focused on Taiwan and Vietnam. Here is some of what we have been building:

Local churches and pastors in Vietnam, who continue boldly in the faith despite persecution. We have supported them with Bibles, Christian teaching, and relief support in recent months.

Thanks to the hard work of the local church members and Priscilla Wan (of FHLHOP in Columbus, OH), the mission base is Kaohsiung is growing by the day. She has arranged for many teams of missionaries to come and stay there, either to do outreach, or as a pitstop where they can be spiritually edified before moving to their next field. The base truly is a great place for any missionary to stay.

Priscilla has asked me to help host teams that come through, as God leads. After a lot of prayer, I think He is asking me to invest more time into this place and, as I wrote above, build connections with emboldened brothers and sisters from around the world. I feel God's hand on this. Starting in May I intend to play host to more teams here. Please pray that God blesses the connections we make through this mission base.

Brother Simon has been translating and distributing Bibles in the tribal dialects of Vietnam for many years. In February, he made a breakthrough: he got government approval to print New Testaments of 6 different tribal languages

At $3 USD per Bible, Simon's team needs to raise support for the printing of 22,000 books. The total amount is due by April 15th. He has asked Go Forth Ministry to sponsor the printing of one of these languages, or 4,000 New Testaments.

God is stirring in the hearts of young people in all corners of the earth.

This generation, one that lives in a time of debauchery and meaninglessness, is desperately seeking the truth. It is honestly a matter of life and death. When the world and their own ways fail them, when the hollow patterns of life are proven purposeless without God, where will they go?

Two years ago, God commissioned us for this task: reach young artists via creative spaces, teach them to see His Beauty through their craft, and send them out. This discipleship mission continues apace with the opening of new doors. With two main projects in the works, and several along the outskirts, the potential to spread the influence of Christ in these creative environments keeps growing.

The TV-YouTube project has slightly changed form and, God willing, I believe we are now looking at the best option for reaching this people group.

The show will now resemble a variety show of sorts, with segments, sketches and viewer interactions, as well as guest appearances. With this diversity of creative opportunity also comes opportunity to involve more people--the very people we are aiming to reach spiritually.

Filming has just begun, but soon we will be hosting full teams of young creatives in our studio as we make episodes of The Brothers Baer. Those of us who are strong believers and disciples of Christ will walk alongside them, offering kindness and love, and the truth, as opportunities arise.

we are saying yes to a project that will likely take us several years to establish.

Over a year ago, a friend offered GFM a generous gift: a full library of hand-made, digital collectibles. A graphic designer, this man created a vast collection of these tradeable tokens, with the intention of using them for the Kingdom. Since his first offer, I believe God has put the right people in the works with GFM to do this project justice.

We are in talks to use this collection as a catalyst for community. What does it look like? Right now, the idea is to create an ARG ("alternate reality game;" interactive storytelling, often involving scavenger hunts, that uses both the digital and real worlds), which would bring people together to solve puzzles, crack codes, and go on adventures together. Ultimately, the subject material of this ARG would intentionally spark talks about higher truth, and ultimately God and Christ.

I know the subject matter may seem a bit unusual. Skulls? But just think about the story in Ezekiel, the Valley of Dry Bones. To paraphrase, God tells Ezekiel to command dry bones to live, and by faith he does so. In moments, an army is brought up before his very eyes.

I believe this is what God wants to do for my generation. We are lost, empty, as good as dead. But, through faith in God, we are raised to life again, given purpose, given hope. These are the truths we will address through this project, and I think God will use it to install into dry bones.

Please pray with us that God will direct the vision for this project. We want it to be made well, and made with intention, as to show respect and honor to His commission. Pray that God will use this project to plant seeds and grow our faith!

As we cover this new ground, we realize we are walking a narrow path. Pitfalls are on either side of us, and we must continue looking toward the prize: the calling of new disciples, the gift of truth and life more abundant, and the hope of Jesus Christ making all things new. We pursue Him first, and by faith we create.

As it says in Ephesians 5, now is not the time for foolishness. No messin' around. Now is the time to be sober-minded and spiritually aware of the steps God would have us take. We put all our faith in Him; His will be done. When that is our motto, I see no limits to what He can do through this endeavor.

As always, thank you so much for your prayers regarding these projects. In praying, you are paving the way for this to happen. May God bless this journey!

From October 28 to November 11, I will be taking a team of seven missionaries to Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan. Here are some itinerary highlights:

In Thailand, we pick up Bibles for tribal Christians, then discreetly carry them into Vietnam.

In Vietnam, we minister to many believers and encourage their faith.

In Taiwan, we join SouSan Church to help them establish a mission base, a hub for people like myself to come and participate in the spreading of the Gospel in the region.

Also in Taiwan, we do outreach with the Taiwan Vietnamese Church (brother Barnabas' church), and again join for a Sunday morning service.

I am truly excited to see how God uses this team to minister to their fellow believers, and bring new ones into the fold. Please join us in praying for safety, boldness, and faith during these 2 weeks abroad.

Before the team leaves, I will be taking a short solo trip to a closed country, where I will visit a good friend and his newlywed wife. I am unable to disclose much here, but I plan to pray with them and scout out their situation for ways that GFM may be able to help. I hope that this will open more doors to work with them in the future. Please pray that this meeting is fruitful and blessed.

In Central Vietnam and Laos, brother John is seeing and facilitating much growth for house churches in villages. Every report he sends contains stories of healings, casting out demons, and many new baptisms.

These brothers are reaching people who have never heard the Gospel, and now they will receive it in their mother tongue, nonetheless. Please pray with us for their safety, their courage, and spiritual intervention to bring God's word all through the country.

Operated by brother Barnabas and his wife, the Taiwan Vietnamese Churches have been an incredible catalyst for making disciples who would otherwise be closed off to the church and the Word.

Barnabas has informed people that he and his wife are praying about a potential move back to Vietnam. That is where they began their ministry work, and they sense a call back home. This would mean a vacancy as the pastor of the TVC, a position that would best be filled, according to Barnabas, by a young couple with lots of energy and passion for God.

Please join us in praying for this possible change. Pray that God would continue blessing the work of Barnabas; that He would raise up new leaders among the Vietnamese, who devote themselves to the body of Christ.

For an artist, perspective changes everything.

A dash of light can affect the overall atmosphere of a room. The mood of a portrait can change from absolutely hopeful to distraught and gloomy, depending on the angle from which the subject is depicted. An actor’s internal perspective determines the believability of their performance. It is common for an artist, when he hits a wall, to take in his dilemma from more perspectives and gain a broader understanding of the thing.

If you are married, you have experienced the huge effect that perspective has on someone’s relation to reality. Though we are looking at the same problem, it is a rare occasion when my wife and I see it in the same way. While this may seem like a problem on its face, the tension between differing perspectives actually paves the way for a greater understanding of what is true and beautiful.

Katee and I are excited to announce the arrival of our daughter, Amelia Jean, on April 5th. Though she came a whole month early, God blessed us with a strong, healthy baby. Praise the Lord! May our family always be a reflection of His love and goodness.

Recently, God has been speaking to me concerning His perspective. How does He see things? As a matter of fact, He gives us a sneak peek. His spirit opens our hearts to see a sliver of His Divine outlook. Jesus told us, “when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth” (John 16:13). Living in all truth? That’s a pretty good place to be.

As we disciple people, there is no gift more valuable than this preview of the Divine perspective. God has given us His eyes, His heart, and His mind, if we are willing to heed them. In order to do God’s will, we must adopt an outsider’s perspective: the perspective of Heaven.

Doing as Jesus did—only as the Father commands (John 5:19)—means that the solutions will often look foreign. He is establishing what the world may see as foolish, and we have to be fools alongside Him. The outside perspective becomes lonely. As we begin to see what He sees, the world might look at us as aliens in a country far from home. For millennia, persecution and martyrdom have been proof of our “strangeness” in the eyes of the world. But the heart of the Father is infallible; He always leads us, and those around us, into truth. Being different can be frustrating and despairing, but it is often a marker of someone God uses for His Divine purposes. Like I said earlier, that tension of living in two realities is what uncovers the beauty of our Creator.

So, Go Forth Ministry continues to pursue God’s perspective. Sometimes—rather, oftentimes—this means doing things that don’t make sense from my point of view. But that is okay. This endeavor is not about saving face. As I adopt His point of view over my own, Psalm 23 has become my guiding principle. “He leads me in paths of righteousness for His namesake.” This is how to pursue a Divine perspective: it is for His glory. We pray that we may have the mind of Christ. If we are willing, who knows what He might accomplish through us?

The Lord continues to do His work all around the world. It is an honor to be even a small participant in a huge story that He is orchestrating on every level. It seems that every time we turn a corner with our overseas missions, there is a new opportunity waiting for us.

           Taiwan Vietnamese Church

As He has for the last two decades, God is working through Brother Khoa in Taiwan to reach the Vietnamese. It is a pleasure to be able to see and participate in their ministry with every mission trip. The number of Vietnamese brothers and sisters they have impacted continues to grow, their churches as well as those who have moved back to Vietnam.

On this most recent trip (which you can read about below), we helped Khoa facilitate an outreach program: English workshops for the Vietnamese. On two occasions, the church members invited their non-believer friends to join the American team for a fun evening and to learn some English. Needless to say, it was an effective outreach tool that we will be using again in the future.

During the last two trips, GFM has had the pleasure of connecting with a church of Taiwanese believers in Kaohsiung. They are looking to transform their beautiful building into a missions base, through renovation and some valuable missionary connections they have. We are excited to share in this vision with them, and help them develop it in any way we can.

From this base, GFM is wanting to seek new opportunities to do outreach in Taiwan. We made many connections on this last trip, and I believe God has set us up with SouSan in an exciting way to bring fruit from these connections.

Our friends in Vietnam are faithfully doing God's work to reach many unreached people groups. Brother John is still reaching the tribal groups in central Vietnam and Laos, while Brother Simon is working on Bible translations for many of the Northern Vietnamese tribes. We hope to connect with both of them on our next trip to Vietnam.

Our friend from His Feet International, Todd Matthews, recently connected with us in Ohio. We discussed the possibility of ministry in China, which is very slim right now. However, we are talking about our options, and there may be some small opportunities to help support some work still going on there. Please pray that God's church would not stop growing there.

From March 4th to the 19th, I had the pleasure of leading a team on a mission trip to Taiwan. I was accompanied by Angie (my mom), Alayna Perdicas, Jonathan and Haley Graham, and David Yoder. Below, you can read some of the regular updates we sent back home as we went on this journey.

Hey everyone! The gang is on their long haul flight to Taiwan now after some early traveling this morning. Some praises for extra comfort during this flight as it wasn’t full so they got to stretch out! Prayers for continued smooth traveling. They will be traveling all night for us and land sometime tomorrow morning. The attached picture is Angie and David with a whole row to themselves!!

We've had a great start to our weekend in Taipei. On Friday, we visited Dahu Park, home of the Moon Bridge. Very lovely place! And when we got back to the hotel, we surprised Mom for her birthday (she had no idea)!
This afternoon, we sat down to dinner with Sam Schneider, a God fearing man we met on the plane, along with his Chinese wife and their two kids. We got to hear their incredible testimonies, pray together and encourage one another.
Then, this evening, we went to the Vietnamese Church for our special outreach event. We play games, ate delicious food, and talked about the Lord. A couple of non-believers joined us, and now we pray that God puts a seed in their hearts.
We will have church tomorrow morning, and we'll let you know how it goes!

Today we attended the Sunday morning service with the Taipei Vietnamese Church. We had a wonderful time together! Got to pray and encourage one another.
We are in a different hotel for the night (we have a great view of the Taipei Main Station). We stopped by the night market this evening, saw some cool performances and ate some delicious food. Tomorrow, we'll take the bullet train to Kaohsiung and join SouSan Church. More updates to come!

It's been a great couple days here in Kaohsiung! Priscilla and Mama Wan have been taking good care of us at SouSan Church. We have been eating some delicious food and seeing come cool places.
On Tuesday evening, we visited the Kaohsiung House of Prayer (KHOP) which is located high up in the tallest building in the city with overlooking windows. Really cool spot to worship the Lord! We joined them for worship and prayed together. They are truly wonderful people.
Today, we went hiking up SouSan mountain, home of a species of Macaque monkey that only lives in Taiwan. They were everywhere! After a long upward hike, we were greeted with an unbelievable view of the city from 1,000 feet up. God's world is big and beautiful!
Over the next couple days, we will help the church with a few odds and ends; then we will attempt some outreach opportunities with the Taiwanese believers here. Pray that God gives us the right opportunities and leads us to the right people. Thank you!

What a turnout for our English workshop! We had as many non-believers as church members come for food and games. Everyone had fun and got to know each other. Then, I had the pleasure of sharing the gospel with the group. Brother Khoa said that afterwards, a number of young people came up to him, asking very intentional questions and wanting to learn more about Jesus. Praise the Lord!

This morning, we joined the Vietnamese again for church. We had a wonderful, touching time of encouragement and prayer. God really worked in people's hearts. After church, we joined the men of the church for some volleyball! David Yoder put everyone to shame.

Tomorrow, we leave to Taipei, where we'll have a couple days to rest and see some sights. Then, it's back home.

Over the past year, Go Forth Ministry's new push to turn artists into disciples of Christ has seen immense growth. While some projects did not move as fast as originally intended, God's timing and touch are visible around every corner of this new endeavor.

At the beginning of last year, we set out to create an environment where creatives could gather, work on a project, come close to each other, and open up to the Creator. That environment is the studio where we will film

The project has been moving forward steadily, with little adjustments being made as needed. We had a need for an actor to play the character opposite me who is based on my brother David. This role will be performed by a friend of ours, Luke Skaggs, an extraordinary local talent. We are very excited to get the ball rolling with Luke.

In November, GFM had the pleasure of coming alongside a local artist and good friend, Evan Zuercher, as he faithfully answered God's call to pursue his art. We supported his debut exhibition in Wooster, which has since opened doors for him in new places. For the whole month of April, his artwork was on display at Galleria Ekkles in Mansfield.

Taiwan is home to nearly 30,000 bridges. I crossed a number of them—and a handful in Vietnam—while on a trip with a short term mission team. Though at first they were a mundane part of our journey, these bridges began speaking volumes to me. They became a metaphor for the work I was doing, both abroad and locally in the US.

“You’re bridging gaps,” a voice in my head explained.

I thought about our experience with a local Taiwanese church in Kaohsiung. We connected with these believers through friends of ours in Columbus, Ohio (learn about their church:

). We participated in a conference with them, worshiping and equipping. Then, when it came time to visit the Vietnamese Church in Kaohsiung with Brother Barnabas, we invited the members of the Taiwanese church to join us.

This was an incredible opportunity! We watched as Taiwanese believers formed a bond with new Vietnamese brothers. This is a great step toward making a stronger Christian community for the Vietnamese people in Taiwan.

During our October mission trip, we visited many believers. In Vietnam, we prayed with pastors and house churches, encouraging them in the face of persecution. We also gave them four laptops to help them with Bible translation work.

In Taiwan, we encouraged and taught from the word. We led four new believers to Christ during our time there!

I also considered the path we are forging with our new direction: discipleship through creativity. The work here is beginning to take form; recently, we have participated in two big projects.

Evan Zuercher, friend and former board member of GFM, has been cultivating his talents in painting for many years. God told him to put his work on display, and Evan answered. He held a showcase, “

The second project is The Brothers Baer, a YouTube TV-show. We finished the very first pilot episode in late September, and we are excited to keep the story coming.

These two projects are the first of many to come, which will be used to reach artists where they are at. We are plowing into uncharted mission fields, praying that God will make disciples out of actors and painters. This is another gap we are bridging.

I am coming to understand: Go Forth is laying the groundwork. Every bridge needs a good foundation, or it will buckle under the weight of its travelers. Our capacity for future impact will depend on our willingness to lay the proper foundation right now.

From October 1st to the 15th of 2024, I had the pleasure of leading a small team on a mission trip to Taiwan and Vietnam. I was accompanied by Angie, my mom, David, my older brother, and Israel, a good friend of ours (my younger sister, Selah, also joined us for part of the time). Below, you can read the regular updates we sent back home as we went on this journey.

Hey everyone! Some of you may have heard, but the Go Forth team’s flight has been cancelled and they are planned to leave Wednesday as of now - however there is a typhoon that is already starting to hit Taiwan right now. Please keep the team is your prayers and pray for the Typhoon to subside so they are still able to go over and take part in this mission - pray also for those in Taiwan that may be affected by the typhoon.

We ate together and prayed together, then we played a worship set and got a great message Joseph and Becca.

Today was the final day of our conference at the House of Prayer. Heard some good teachings from Becca, Priscilla and Joseph. After eating with the church and relaxing in the afternoon, we went to the Vietnamese Church for a Saturday night prayer meeting. They served us Vietnamese cuisine and Pizza Hut!

We brought several member of the House of Prayer along to the meeting, so it was conducted in English, Mandarin, AND Vietnamese. While complicated, this was such an encouraging experience, bringing three different cultures together to worship and pray. We are so glad to be connecting the Vietnamese church with some local Christians and can't wait to see what God does through this connection.

We had such a great day with the Kaohsiung Vietnamese Church! They prepared a special meal for us, and to celebrate their Pastor Hung, who is soon returning to Vietnam after seven years serving in Khoa's churches. We prayed a blessing over him in the days to come.

Tonight we went to the night market with the House of Prayer people (but I didn't get any pictures; maybe the others have some to share?) and we ate some delicious Taiwanese street food. Issy, David and Mom had stinky tofu for the first time. To quote David, "It's like having a vacuum cleaner in your mouth." Pretty accurate.

Today was a long day of travel, but it went about as well as it could have. We took the bullet train from Kaohsiung to the Taipei airport, where we boarded our plane to Vietnam. After landing in Hanoi, we found Sang and his assistant Kis, and we all checked into our hotel. We were able to walk around this evening and see a little bit of Hanoi. Enjoy the pictures.

Today we had a wonderful time in Hanoi, experiencing the Vietnamese culture. We went shopping, had delicious food and coffee, saw some very old temples, houses and cathedrals, and watched as people prepared for an upcoming national holiday.

Finally, we got to watch what they call "Water Puppet Theatre," a special kind of puppetry that uses underwater controls. If anyone is interested in looking up the mechanics of this, I would love to know how exactly it works. It was so funny and entertaining! Gave us a good insight into Vietnamese history and folklore.

What an incredible time in Vietnam! We spent most of it in a van driving through mountains, which was very bumpy, but very worthwhile. The views were breathtaking.

After a long drive to the northernmost parts of the country, we visited the Pa Then people, a minority group with whom Simon has been working to translate the Bible into their mother tongue. They were such kind, hospitable people. What a privilege to be with them and pray together!

We stayed in a hotel in northern Vietnam that was one of the fanciest I've seen, and was only about $10/person/night. It had spiral wooden stairs going all the way up. After that stay we traveled to Quan Ba, a village in a beautiful valley. There we met a pastor and his son of the Suong people, another minority group. It was an honor to meet him and hear about his work bringing the gospel to his people.

That evening we walked around Hanoi and got some Pho (which was delicious). Issy barely fit in the restaurant, as pictured. Now we are resting in our hotel in Taipei, Taiwan. Thank the Lord that our journey to Vietnam was a safe and successful one! We are appreciative of all of you who are praying on our behalf.

And Thank the Lord that we will now rest for a full day tomorrow. We won't have an update for Saturday, but we will share how the Sunday services go this weekend.

The team split up to go to two different churches for the Sunday service. Mom, David and Selah went to Taipei (last photo) and Mom shared the message there; Issy and I went to Taichung and shared with them. We led one Vietnamese lady and one elderly Taiwanese lady to the Lord! After church, we played volleyball with the church members. They do this every week after church, and they showed us up. While we were making our way back, the Taipei team went to visit the House of Prayer in that city. Maybe one of them can share their pictures/their experience there!

What a wonderful last day in Taiwan. We got the chance to do a little sightseeing: first Taipei 101, then the Chiang-Kai Shek Memorial. Truly beautiful stuff.

In the evening, some of the members of the Taipei Vietnamese Church gathered for a special meeting, just so Issy and I could see them before we go back home. We had a wonderful time of fellowship and worship. We also had the privilege to lead two young people to Christ! We thank the Lord that they are joining a tight-knit community in pursuit of Him.

We are now on our way to the airport where we will say goodbye to Pastor Khoa and board our flight home. Please pray that our travels today are safe and smooth, and even restful if God can swing that.

Lastly, I want to tell you all how grateful I am for your prayers throughout this trip. They do not go unnoticed, and we wouldn't be able to do this without you. Thank you so much! See you soon.

Jaren's Thoughts - The Language of your Outreach

Who is speaking your cultural language?

As I have begun exploring how to reach Gen Z through art and culture, I have found that people struggle to conceptualize the mission.

I say, “If we want to reach Gen Z, we have to find new pathways to do it.”

People answer, “Oh yes, I totally agree.”

However, when I explain that “we have to do it through art and culture”—that is when I start to lose them.

I can understand the hesitation; I constantly question the validity of this claim myself. It feels like a stretch to say that the arts can even come close to doing what international missions work has done. Not only that, but the arts, being a creative endeavor, have the appearance of play rather than work. It is not providing anyone food or drink or clothing or the Bible, so it must not be as important as the work of bush pilots in Africa.

Nothing against bush pilots in Africa. In my opinion, they are some of the coolest people on the planet.

of these supplies? Where did the Bibles come from? Whose second-hand clothes are the needy wearing? Who is paying for the food and water sent to desolate places?

While the arts do not directly provide basic needs, let us think a bit more multi-dimensional. Care for the needy originates from a healthy, God-fearing people. Will their needs continue to be met if our culture abandons its roots in the Gospel? First and foremost, we need to speak the Truth of Christ into

Because it is the language of my generation.

I have a friend who was called to do missions in China. He was stationed there with an organization that would put him through missionary schooling for a couple years. The first thing they had him do: learn Chinese. For six months, he did nothing but study Chinese for eight hours every day. I probably would have gotten sick of that sort of regiment, but he stuck with it, and he is fluent in Chinese.

Why did he spend so much time learning Chinese? We all know the obvious answer: if you want to reach a people group, learn their language. Learn how they communicate. Learn how they express themselves. It would have been ineffective and dangerous for my friend to learn

Chinese halfheartedly, disregarding cultural context and nuances. If you go out on the mission field boldly swinging the Sword of the Spirit, but you lack the tact necessary to understand and be understood, it could result in the persecution of many Christians in a place like China.

However, since he learned Chinese properly, he was enabled to reach people—individuals. He could connect with peoples’ hearts in new ways. His new language was not just a technical tool, but a spiritual one, allowing him access to souls.

The American church is struggling to engage with people my age. Could it be that they are not communicating with tact? Could it be that they do not know the language of Gen Z?

I want to treat my generation like any other mission field would be treated: learn the language. As it happens, Gen Z speaks the language of art better than the language of Christianity. Fewer members of Gen Z than any other generation attend church; they also watch more YouTube than any other generation. They are captivated by creativity and beauty, things the American church is not communicating.

Someone is going to speak Gen Z’s cultural language. Who is it going to be? Are we going to allow secular nihilism to continue dominating their conversation, or are we going to tactfully point them toward higher Truth?

I am seeking out environments where we can do two things: learn the language of artists and creativity; and give them the Truth in such creative ways as will tip the culture in the direction of Christ’s love. I believe God is overseeing this mission, and I trust Him every step of the way.

For over 40 years, Go Forth Ministry has taken the gospel out to the nations. Now, We believe it is time to focus on our own nation. God is giving us some exciting opportunities to do this.

If you are going to reach a people group, you must be able to speak their language. When a missionary goes to work overseas, he learns about the culture he is visiting in order to reach them in better, more personal ways. When Barnabas hosts church, he engages with his members as one Vietnamese to another, sharing cultural norms and values. When Go Forth Ministry looks toward the harvest field of young Americans, a creative and artistic group, we must speak the language of creators and artists if we want to make

That is what we are doing. After taking time to formulate a vision and know what we are up against, we are beginning to step out into cultural realms. The language of artists is their art, their creation and the creations of others; this is the dialect we are learning to speak. We want to work with artists on a creative level, providing them with expertise and wisdom that will slowly guide them to Christ.

In Matthew chapter 13, Jesus tells a parable about a farmer sowing seeds. Most Christians will know this parable, and there are many takeaways. This is one insight I have discovered: if the farmer wants his seeds to be healthy, he must cultivate healthy soil for them. This is our lesson as disciple-makers; we must create the “good-soil” environment for new seeds to grow. That is precisely what Go Forth’s new American mandate is about.

In an exciting turn of events, Go Forth Ministry is now supporting the production of a new show. My brother and I have had this vision of a sitcom-style show, about the two of us making music and trying to “hit it big.” We recently had a friend offer his film studio for free, where we can produce the whole thing. We have begun the writing/envisioning process, and now we are preparing to build sets, prepare production facilities, and the like. Our plan is to begin filming pilot episodes by Autumn; these videos will go out on YouTube to start.

Jaren and his brother David have played music ever since they were little. For some time, they have had thought of writing a show of their experiences. This show will feature the two brothers working together to create and perform the best Rock music they can muster, with a lot of amusing banter along the way.

This is an incredible chance for us to work with other artists and begin creating that environment for Truth, Beauty, and Christ Himself to come into young peoples’ hearts. This is step one, our first fruits. If we devote this work completely to God, trusting Him to do amazing things with the work of our hands, I believe this will be an influential gateway into the cultural realm.

Your attention is always appreciated; you can rest assured knowing that your dedication to this work is helping us build the Kingdom of Heaven.

           Go Forth Ministry

just got back from a short-term mission trip, ministering to the Vietnamese people in Taiwan and Vietnam. Altogether, we were a team of six men (among whom was Bradie Ramella, a nineteen-year-old victim of a motorcycle accident, whose life itself is a miracle. Despite having only one leg, he is the most driven, persevering man I know). While overseas, we had the pleasure of ministering in two different ways: preaching and communing at churches in Taiwan, and carrying Bibles into Vietnam for persecuted Christians to read.

In Taiwan, the team was struck, as I was on my first trip, by the fervor, boldness, and strong faith of the believers there. These are people who have left behind everything—their culture, their reputation, and in some cases their families—just to follow Jesus. Their lives have been turned upside-down for Him; and it has given them such joy and courage and peace.

They were encouraged by our presence in their Sunday services. It shows them that they are not alone on this arduous journey following Christ, but together we are one in Him. As we encouraged them through scripture, prayer and fellowship, it dawned on me how beautiful their faith has made them. These are people who stand out because of their newfound purpose and unity in Christ, especially contrasted with a pagan culture.

Not only are these trips encouraging, but they are also convicting. After witnessing the boldness with which my fellow believers worship and offer their all to our King, I am left asking myself:

Where is my fervor? Can I give everything, like these brothers and sisters? What will it cost me to go wherever I am called?

Brother Simon led the GFM team carrying Bibles from Cambodia into Vietnam. These Bibles are in the language of the Hmong people, a minority tribal group that lives in Northern Vietnam. Altogether, we brought them 192 Bibles, each of which is read by a whole family. A few of these went with the team back to Taiwan, where Vietnamese churches play host to dozens of Hmong.

Ever since 2007 when they first arrived in Taiwan, they have been reaching out to Vietnamese immigrants there, teaching and discipling them for Christ. Now they are meeting with over 500 church members, both in-person and through video calls. When I asked about their needs, Barnabas gave me three specifics.

I recently met with brother John, a longtime partner of Go Forth. His ministry, like the churches in Taiwan, keeps growing. He goes from village to village in Vietnam and Laos, preaching, healing the sick, and planting house churches. This field is so ripe for harvest, and there are many needs, from Bible schooling, to pastor support, to digging wells for fresh drinking water. John wrote this to all of you on February 28:

Learning the word of God is critically needed for church workers. For the reason of security, it is impossible to host Bible courses [in their] villages; therefore it is good for them to attend Bible school...So, I’m writing this letter to ask for your support so that these church workers might attend the Bible school. Knowledge of God’s word is very important for church workers in their work to win souls for God.

For the glory of God, your investment in the Kingdom of God through the tribal ministry would be particularly valued. I would be very grateful if you get involved in supporting church workers to attend Bible School.

Below is an article by Matt Schwan, who came with us on a trip to Taiwan, Cambodia and Vietnam. He wrote this article for his church, Living Water in Dalton, OH, about his experience:

Early this month, I returned from a mission trip to East Asia with Go Forth Ministry, an outreach organization based in Dalton. Six of us, including our own Bradie Ramella, spent two weeks visiting Taiwan, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Our purpose: to bring the Word of God to a people group forbidden from reading it.

You may remember Khoa Dinh, one of the missionaries Living Water supports (and the beneficiary of our 2022 Christmas Give). Brother Khoa's ministry in Taiwan plants churches targeting Vietnamese migrant workers, disproportionately twentysomething men who move to Taiwan for a few years to work. As they find Jesus in Taiwan through Brother Khoa's ministry, they eventually return home to Vietnam and—cautiously—share the gospel with their families and friends. (Vietnam's communist government is not exactly keen on freedom of religion.)

We visited three of these churches in Taiwan and were incredibly blessed by the strength of our Vietnamese brothers' and sisters' faith and passion for God. When our trip's leader, Jaren, preached a sermon through an interpreter to this small, literally upper-room gathering, a young man came forward to receive Christ for the first time—and was quickly smothered with hugs and applause.

From there, we flew to Cambodia and then to Vietnam, bringing with us some illegal contraband: 188 Bibles. While we had prepared for a number of scenarios if caught, the customs agent at the airport—praise God—never once looked up from his phone as we casually walked through the "Nothing to Declare" lane. Once in Vietnam, we handed the Bibles off to our contacts for discreet distribution.

The Bibles we smuggled in are printed in the language of the Hmong, an indigenous ethnic group dispersed throughout East Asia whose language is one of over 150 spoken in Vietnam alone. Missionaries in the 1950s created Hmong's written language, and I was floored to learn that today, a reliable predictor of whether or not a Hmong person is a Christian is whether or not they can read.

As our brothers and sisters in Vietnam risk life and liberty to speak the name of Jesus to the Hmong people, the gospel is doing what it always does: raising literacy, releasing from poverty, healing the sick.

And, I pray, it will also set the captives free. Our last day in Vietnam, in downtown Saigon, I stood with our Vietnamese contact in front of prominent statue of Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam's founding communist dictator. Our contact leaned over and said to me, quietly, "One day we will tear down that statue, just like the statues of Lenin."

I replied, "That will be a good day."

"I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." - Jesus (Matthew 16:18b)
